DOBLE OCHO 2011 review

The 2011 Doble Ocho was a hot summer festival !! In the end of april, during 10 days, a real heatwave covered the Netherlands and Nijmegen, resulting in temperatures from 23 to 28 celcius. This made the 2011 Doble Ocho edition a very 'Hot' festival. For the first time in 8 years we could open the doors of the Vereeniging bars to the balconies, overlooking the main square of Nijmegen in the city centre. With candels on the tables and the lights over the city, this was a very romantic add-on to this years edition where we introduced the tangobazaar. Also we introduced the Tango Music Contest and the Music JAM and on the same day, and we had a Spanish winner of the concurso, El Repique from Barcelona. As result of winning the contest, they will now play on the Int. tangofestival of Sitges on july 14th.
There where also tango afterparties in our Tangohotel 'Courage ',that was filled with festival guests. People enjoyed the festival programme with workshops from maestro's Like Adrian & Alejandra, Martin & Maurizio and Ismael and Maria. The friday and saturday hosted over 400 people in the Vereeniging, and there was a fine dance flow, with ofcourse on saturday the extra Fusion Room.
For many, another highlight was the Misa Criolla in the Valkhof Museum on Easter Sunday. It was the finish of another Doble Ocho with lots of live music, long hours of dancing, hot sun and warm encounters.

Doble Ocho: Triple Ocho next year ?

Nijmegen is full of tango activities next month. Not just Doble Ocho: two other major tango events will transform Nijmegen into 'Buenos Aires on the River Waal'.
On the 7th of March ten shops and venues in Nijmegen will be presenting live tango music and two salons are also taking place. From the 12th to the 14th a classic Spiegeltent ('tent of mirrors') will be positioned right in the centre of town with numerous tango and Argentina-related activities including a concert by Juan Carlos Caceres, tango cafés, a chacarera workshop, mate drinking and wine-tasting and lectures about Argentina. But why so many events, in a small town, all so close together? Is Doble Ocho expanding ?

It is Doble Ocho’s aim to have an extra high profile in Nijmegen every second year. This was realized in the past with the Caravane Tango, the ‘biggest tango class' world record attempt, and the concert with church organ, bandoneon and bass in 2003. Now, in 2010, it is time to do something special again and Nijmegen, ‘Buenos Aires on the Waal' is the result – coinciding with celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of Argentina’s independence. An exchange has been arranged between the Joris Ivens Foundation in Nijmegen and the National Film and Documentary Archive in Argentina. Also the Embassador of Argentina in the Netherlands, Mr. Santos Goni, will open this programme together with the Major of Nijmegen, Mr. Thom de Graaf, on March 12, 12.00 in the Spiegeltent on Koningsplein.

So a lot of things are happening, and the regular Doble Ocho participant might ask: is Doble Ocho undergoing a major programme of expansion? The answer is no! Next year will be the normal 5 day festival again - with the usual extras of course, and... the 3x8 celebrations. El Corte will be celebrating its 24th birthday!! Will the festival change its name? I guess not, but probably some special stuff will be organized again to celebrate the 3x8! With for example again two salons in El Corte again!! ( that’s how it started in 2003!)

The 2011 festival will be back at Easter. This is sometimes also confusing, why is Doble Ocho not always at Easter? The reason is El Corte’s chained salons. For example, one will take place over the Easter weekend of 2010, and an overlap with Doble Ocho is not possible. It would break an almost 24 year old tradition, the oldest free tango marathon in Europe (the world?) organized successively for the past 23 years without omission!

I am most happy to invite you for the 7th Int. tangofestival Doble Ocho !!
In March 2010 Nijmegen will be transformed to Buenos Aires at the River Waal ! The 7th Int. Tangofestival Doble Ocho will transform Holland’s oldest city into Tango-City starting with a special pre-programme celebrating the 200 year existence of the Republic of Argentine.
The renewing quintet Tango Extremo will kick-off the tangofestival on march 17 with their theatre show ‘Carnaval de Buenos Aires’. Also the TangoFusion Music JAM will take place that day in Lindenberg café 23 offering an interactive experience and process of improvisation and creation between the musicians and the dancers. For this event Gustavo Mozzi and Latin Grammy Award winner Facundo Guevara (ARG) is invited. Thursday is fusion day and the famous Tango electro band TANGHETTO will give their concert in the beautiful WAALZAAL of the Nijmegen theatre. TANGHETTO recently won the prestigious Carlos Gardel Award in Argentine. For visuals the German Tanguerilla offers ‘a visual concept lounge with interactive video-Installations and immerging space-concept’.
Friday is the traditional presentation of the winner of the tangomusic Contest during the salon at night, where Rafaël and Susanne will perform. The winner is chosen in the afternoon by a professional jury. Saturday the GRAN NOCHE will make your feet tired and your ears longing for even more Music. This evening the Berlin based Puro Apronte will make you dance non stop, with well known Bandoneonplayer Michael Reil. The only break will be for the show of the Maestro’s of the festival. Switch dancefloors when you like, there is a special fusion floor with DJ Arthur ( Yes, he is back at doble ocho ! ) And after a few hours of sleep, the tangocafé will offer another live music experience, followed by the farewell salon in, finally, El Corte !!

Doble Ocho festival review

Dear Tango Friends,
The festival is over. But not in many hearts and minds of so many visitors that came to a sunny Nijmegen to dance easter away on 5 days and nights covered with sun, warmth and a smile. Everybody experienced her or his special Doble Ocho moment, shared or alone, but most likely in an embrace in a tangocafe, a fusion song, a classic milonga, on live music, on vibrations from inside. We all embraced a new winner of the music concurso (Quinteto Arrastre )and where pushed up to energetic heights by the Astillero crew. Carefully made steps on vinyl records mastered and selected by DJ JUR on friday, re-discovering the origins of recorded music through the scratches that occured randomly when we bumped too hard near the DJ's spot. Lindenberg cafe gave us the cafe atmosphere that balanced the GRAN NOCHE feeling of he ART DECO Vereeniging locations. Dancing still small and carefull, like it was a chained salon saturday climax moment. Eric and Henry surprised us again on friday in their mass workshop, and Alexander Zabara caught the light in between transforming the dance into an art of movement displayed in his magical work of photography. And Stefan just couldn't stop on sunday, afraid of finishing this high energy goodbye salon. But a goodbye is necessary to meet again, and that we meet again is sure for tangofriends.
